So I’m reading this article, which is comical in its own right, and the last couple of paragraphs struck me as humorous.
The comedy of the article is that even though its member schools are bleeding financially, and successful 1AA football programs are considering dropping the sport, the NCAA sees fit to expand their HQ to the tune of a small state lottery victory ($35MM).
But that’s not the LOL part. It’s the last quote, by Georgia president Michael Adams, that got me:
“We decided that the market was such that it was advantageous to do that now…”
What market would that be? Finally, don’t let this part buried in the middle escape you:
“In January, the Legislative Council will consider a proposal that trims the number of regular-season games from 29 to 28, or 26 with an exempt tournament. The committees will continue to debate other proposals that would allow schools to pay for travel expenses of a recruit’s parents or legal guardians during official visits and mandatory summer school.”
Fewer games would stink for us all, yes. But under consideration is a new policy that allows a school, if it can afford it ain these rough economic times, via some mechanism like a pile of BCS teevee money, to fly out not just a recruit, but his family too!
Tom Pecora once told me the major conference schools are dictating policy and he is getting comfortable with that. It’s a widening gap. Gary Parrish knows.
