…until I had time to look it up. Later today we’ll discuss Northeastern football, specifically how it relates to basketball. And a few predictions, too.
First, the promised link to viewing options. I didn’t know the CAA folks added the link to the ESPN scoreboard, and the game notes pdf is the same one distributed in press rooms. You want info; there it is.
I didn’t know:
- In the Jawan Carter free throw exhibition (19-26 against Penn), Fonzie Dawson made 5-7 threes.
- Drexel lost Leon Spencer during the gut-wrenching Rutgers loss with a broken wrist. The senior is a vital post presence for the Dragons. Spencer is probably out until at least until February, and we will have to see on a medical redshirt. (is eligible. The rule is no more than 20% of a team’s games, which calculates to five. Remember, redshirts don’t have to be declared until the end of the season.
- Also for Drexel, freshman forward Derrick Thomas recorded his first double-double at Niagara with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Bruiser mentioned preseason that Thomas will remind folks of Scott Rodgers. That’s a Rodgers stat line.
- Lost in Hancockmania and Cam Long’s banker-winner against Indiana is sophomore Mike Morrison’s huge game. He posted a double-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots. It was the most rejections by a Mason player since 2001.
- Hofstra freshman Halil Kanacevic shared the CAA youngster of the week with Mason’s Luke Hancock by averaging 8.0 points and 8.7 rebounds. I’m not saying anything, but those are Adrian Uter numbers.
- From Harrisonburg, JMU went 13-of-24 from beyond the arc against FIU and won; they “hit” 3-of-23 treys against Murray State and lost. Correlation? Duh.
- Also for JMU, Dazz Thornton returned from his shoulder injury and made a difference last night in the win over NC Central (6-7 FG and 14 points in 21 minutes). This may be a way different team when Denzel Bowles warps the hardwood.
- Finally, Pierre Curtis had a perfect night last night: made all three FGs, all eight free throws, had seven rebounds and six assists. Freshman Darren White will shoot from anywhere and scored 20 points. These guys are going to be frustratingly good this season.
- Northeastern was down 19-4 against Utah State before rallying to win. A comeback like that in a game with so few points scored is impressive.
- Also, an insider said that Utah State was so well coached and executed so well they looked like robots out there. Remember, USU won 30 games and went to the NCAA tournament last year. Like William & Mary over Richmond, this win is going to look very good come February.
- Sure ODU hasn’t played anyone of note, but this is insanely impressive: the Monarchs are +15.7 in rebound margin and have beaten all four foes by at least 14 on the glass. The Monarchs also top the CAA in scoring defense (50.0 ppg).
- ODUs game Friday against Missouri will be very interesting to watch. And for some of you old timers, the name Zaire Taylor should be familiar. Taylor played his freshman year at Delaware before transferring to Missouri.
- Larry Sanders has taken three shots from beyond the arc, making one. Those are his first three bonus attempts of his career. I’m not saying he is auditioning for scouts, but if Sanders goes that route, VCU is not as good of a team. What’s best for Larry Sanders is not necessarily what’s best for VCU.
- One thing is also obvious for VCU: the farther Jay Gavin gets from sitting out, the better he looks. The old “dropping rust” theory is clearly at play. This kid is very good.
- William & Mary is quietly looking solid. They are a Harvard Heave from 3-1 and had two good wins this week. The Tribe evened its record at 2-2 after wins over Richmond (78-71) and a roadie over Manhattan (75-70).
- David Schneider earned conference player of the week honors by averaging 20.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg for the week, including a team-best 25 points against UR. Senior forward Danny Sumner netted a team-high 17 points at Manhattan and has tallied double figures in six straight games.
