The day that got away…but I see the CAA is 20-23 in noncon so far, with three games in the Oughta Win category tonight. Milestone.

Another big slate tomorrow (Tuesday):

Delaware at Siena – 7 pm
VMI at UNC Wilmington – 7 pm
Drexel at Penn – 7 pm
Charlotte at Hofstra – 7 pm
Towson at Navy – 7 pm

Mull does a solid ’round the conference here.

Weekend Highlights:

We saw UNCW not just look competitive, but look darn good at times. Very interestingly, Mull blogs today that the Hawks could use some perimeter scoring. That statement made me choke, not because I disagree but because I don’t know if anyone would believe those words could be written. Will OhHAYerbee looks solid.

VCU drummed Oklahoma in the Jeff Capel Return Game, destined to be theĀ  official theme of Why Majors Don’t Play Road Games Against Mid Majors. The Sooners didn’t get within 10 points after 18-9. If you weren’t a CAA fan, it was actually a boring game. Significant note: Larry Sanders played about 10 minutes with three fouls. It was from around the 14 minute mark to the four minute mark. That’s the kind of timeframe when major conference teams step on mid majors. For VCU to have its best player on the floor for that time was critical.

Cam Long’s brick clutch three was the punctuation on a solid weekend in Puerto Rico for Mason. The winner gave the Patriots a 69-66 win over Indiana. I don’t care what the record shows, those guys have the look of a very good team. Skill plus athleticism and a little size is a crushing combination. Luke Hancock? Wow–dude looks like a junior and fills a boxscore.

Matt Brady has more injured players. Now there’s a shock. You’d think someone at JMU would give Hawkeye Pierce a call. That guy always fixed things.

Big mid on mid victory for Nor’easter over Utah State. End game video here, and note the students surrounding the court. File that one away for January.

Love that Delaware showed some pluck. The Hens were down by significant numbers and could’ve folded against Penn, before pulling out a 97-94 double OT win. This includes a 15-point hole with about 11 minutes to play. Jawan Carter hit, and I’ll go slowly so you know it isn’t a mistype: 19 free throws to lead the Fightin’ Montays.

Ooos Krubally posted an 11 and 13 dub dub, his third double-double of the year. Ga State showed well against a solid IUPUI team, but lost in OT.

We finally saw the actual ODU Monarchs Saturday. Without the luxury of 29-6 leads, Blaine Taylor made some decisions and played his guys. It turned out well in a 70-62 win over Marshall. Frank Hassell had a 13/12 dub dub (seven offensive rebounds); and Gerald Lee played like Gerald Lee.

And William & Mary valued the basketball, which is really how you win: 18 assists on 22 field goals, and they committed just six turnovers in their win over Manhattan.

One Response to “Basketball…”

The CAA is off to a solid start. It’s going to be a great regular season. Thanks for the Mason love…I’ll even forgive you for the brick comment, since Long got lucky (but, I’ll take it). A 2nd straight CAA rookie of the week award for Hancock, who is looking wiser than a freshman and playing like a vet. I love the kid. He’s stepped up with Long suffering from the cramp issues. Morrison’s performance vs. IU was brilliant as well, and we finally saw what Long can do when healthy. It’s going to a fight for the top all year in the CAA.
