Good one for the Dukes last night, a nonconner over Radford. Neither team seemed to want to win it, but JMU managed to hang on. The win breaks a four-game slide for the Brady Bunch, and brings the conference to 70-62 overall in noncon action.

Also, we’ll get into Bracketbusters and play around with second half scenarios in the coming days. Specifically I mean tomorrow, because the second half begins, but if there’s time you may see something later today.

Ingest what you wish from the following meander:

  • Though an actual release has yet to be seen (by me), we are hearing Bill Coen has received a contract extension. Long overdue.
  • We have a pile of three-letter, Guy Name home buildings in the CAA. It’s odd really. The Stu, The Ted, The Bob, The DAC, The Kap. The Convo and Trask don’t count, but kind of do count. Pat Center is close. Towson’s new building is going to need a name. No pressure. (The Dan? The Wes? Steve?)
  • Drexel shot 16-of-34 from 3-point range last week after hitting just 2-of-27 treys the week before.
  • Jawan Carter is averaging 40.1 minutes per game in CAA play.
  • Joe Dukes averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals for the week while shooting 60% from the floor. It was not the best individual performance.
  • Pierre Curtis, who is JMU’s career leader in minutes played and steals, is 16 assists shy of Joe Pfahler’s career mark of 420.
  • Johnny Wolf hit seven treys and averaged 17.5 ppg in two CAA games, including a season-best 19 points at GSU. Backcourt mate Chad Tomko contributed 16.7 ppg and 5.7 apg for the week. Here’s why.
  • NUs 11-game romp is its longest since 1986-87 and is tied for the third-longest in the nation. NU shot a season-high 58.5% from the floor against VCU and has hit 50% or better in four of its last five games. Chase Allen is shooting 59% on treys in CAA play. Nkem Ojougboh has blocked at least one shot in 22 straight contests. NkemO is shooting 51-68 (75%) from the field during the 11-game streak.
  • Kent Bazemore had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists at W&M. ODU is 7-0 this season when he dishes out at least at five assists. ODU had five players average between 9.0 ppg and 11.0 ppg last week.
  • Larry Sanders averaged 20.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg for the week, including his fifth double-double (22 pts/10 reb) of the year at NU. Sanders ranks among the top five in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, FG percentage and blocked shots.
  • The Fightin’ Pugs rank among the top 10 in the nation in fewest turnovers (10.7 tpg) and assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
  • The CAA has four teams ranked among the top 53 in the latest RPI released by Collegiate Basketball News through games of Jan. 24. Old Dominion (#36), William & Mary (#45), VCU (#49) and Northeastern (#53). Only four conferences (Big East – 9, Big 12 – 8, Atlantic 10 – 6 and the ACC – 5) have more than four teams in the RPI’s top 53.
  • Mason’s Andre Cornelius added 18 points versus Hofstra and he’s averaging 15.3 ppg over the past four contests.
  • Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins is one of only seven players in Division I to be averaging at least 18 points (18.3 ppg), four rebounds (4.2 rpg) and four assists (4.1 apg) per game.

Maybe a good three letter name for Towson’s new building would be “the Few”, as in few fans, few players, and few results worth noting.

FYI…article in today’s POST on Cam Long and his cramping issues.
