There’s actual news to report!

The CAA was not invited back to play in the 2013 ESPN Bracketbusters event. The regular season will be played straight through January and February.

Editorial comment #1: is anybody–and I mean anybody–surprised that ESPN would do this in the wake of the CAA signing a TV deal with NBC Sports? You know, the CAA never really did anything of note in the event, other than validate its existence.

Editorial comment #2: This makes me happy.

Towson has selected Team Services, LLC to secure naming rights to its new arena.

Editorial comment: The unofficial motto at Towson: “Mike Waddell Is Not Screwing Around.”

Hofstra AD Jack Hayes is leaving The Island to take the same position at Brown University. Danny McCabe has been named interim AD.

Editorial comment: Hey Danny–welcome! Nothing’s really going on with the CAA right now. No need to study up–take your time and get comfy.

VCU announced it has hired Jeremy Ballard as an assistant coach. Ballard replaces Jamion Christian, who took the head coaching job at his alma mater, Mt. St. Mary’s.

Editorial comment: a source told me of this and said Ballard looks like Shaka Smart. Wrong. He looks a lot more like former Atlanta braves slugger David Justice.

Side note: VCU also announced Reco McCarter will transfer at the end of the semester.

I, for one, get tired of hearing the “experts” at ESPN talk all season about how little the regular season means. Of course if Dook loses to North-South-East-West-State-U of Florida, they are right. It makes no difference. But, let a Mason or ODU lose to that same school, and they are dead in the water as far as the selection committee is concerned. The so-called mid-major school will have to spend the rest of the season trying to make up for a loss that would indeed mean nothing to the power conference school come selection time.
For us “mid- major” folks EVERY game is a big game. And that is part of what makes OUR seasons so intense…and meaningful!
